Color My Summer Skirt

Summer is an easy time to add color to a wardrobe.  There’s nothing like a bright and cheerful print to get you outside and enjoying the beautiful weather.  I’ve had this Heather Bailey Lindy Leaf print in my stash for quite awhile and I decided it was finally time to make it my own.

I came across this older tutorial on Sew, Mama, Sew!, and thought I would give it a try.  It’s a simple gathered skirt with a shirred back waistband.  This gave me a chance to try out some new sewing techniques like shirring, as well as adding an underskirt for lining.

It took me a few evenings to pull this together, mostly because I spent several hours trying to figure out how to use elastic thread in my bobbin for shirring.  I scoured the internet for tips and tutorials and still I’m not sure how to do this.  I did manage to get a shirred look, but it wasn’t as tight as I hoped it would be and I haven’t been able to recreate the look.  Apparently Brother sewing machines are very difficult to use elastic thread with.  Bummer, because there are so many cute little girl dress with shirring that I would love to make.

I paired the skirt with a cute aqua blue ruffle tank, I think the colors complement each other and really make them pop.  I was looking for more of a muted dusty blue color, but I guess that color isn’t “in” right now.  I will definitely be packing this for my vaca in San Diego next week!
